The 2024 Australia Day Honours List has recognised members of the Macquarie University community across a range of fields, including environmental conservation, medicine, and Indigenous health.

The annual awards, announced by the Governor-General, His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Retd), acknowledge exceptional Australians who have benefited their communities at a local, national and international level.

Vice-Chancellor S Bruce Dowton said: “Through innovation, through research and through service, universities have a vital role to play in our communities. The Australia Day Honours List is a strong reflection of this role.

“I wish to congratulate Macquarie University staff, as well as former staff and alumni, who have been acknowledged for their dedication and achievements in their respective fields. They have each made meaningful contributions of which they can be most proud.”

Among the University’s honourees, Associate Professor Graham Gumley, MQ Health’s Clinical Program Head, Musculoskeletal and Plastics, was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for significant service to medicine in the field of orthopaedics.

A specialist hand surgeon, Associate Professor Gumley has had enormous impact across a career spanning almost five decades. Highlights include his tenure as Chair of HOPE Worldwide Australia from 2010 to 2020, his work in Cambodia, where he established a surgery training program, and two Humanitarian Service Awards from the Australian Orthopaedic Association (2012 and 2015).

Professor Gold has worked with the World Health Organization in various capacities and, since 2009, has been investigating the repurposing of antiviral therapies for diseases such as multiple sclerosis and motor neurone disease.

From the School of Natural Sciences, Honorary Senior Research Fellow Dr Patricia Hutchings received an AM for significant service to marine science, and to environmental conservation.
