In a nod to the University’s broad impact, all four faculties were represented, while Macquarie was featured across seven of The Australian’s eight disciplines. The University also secured both top institution and top researcher in five fields.
Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research), Professor Sakkie Pretorius, said the University’s collaborative approach to research was a key driver of its increasing success.
“Macquarie University’s position as one of Australia's leading research institutions has been made possible by an ongoing commitment to conducting high-quality, cross-disciplinary and applied research, as well as research-focused investment initiatives,” he said.
“The launch earlier this year of 10 new research centres reiterates this commitment, and the acknowledgement from Research 2024 reflects the University’s continued upwards trajectory.
“Congratulations not only to the individual researchers who have been highlighted by The Australian, but to the entire Macquarie University research network.”

- Distinguished Professor Ron Rapee, child and adolescent psychology (Health and Medical Sciences)
- Professor John Dumay, accounting and taxation (Business, Economics and Management)
- Clinical Professor Richard Harvey, otolaryngology (Health and Medical Sciences)
- Professor Anand Deva, plastic and reconstructive surgery (Health and Medical Sciences)
- Professor Martin Whiting, animal behaviour and ethology (Life Sciences and Earth Sciences)
- Professor Xuan Duong, geometry (Physics and Mathematics)
- Professor Hui (Philip) Li, social work (Social Sciences)
Emeritus Professor David Christian, from the Department of History and Archaeology, was acknowledged on a list of ‘living legends’, people noted for their large presence in public discourse worldwide.
