The New Colombo Plan is an initiative by the Australian Government aimed at strengthening ties with its regional neighbours while supporting students in gaining valuable international experience and networks.
Two Bachelor of Psychology students, Caitlin De Lorm and May Labios, were awarded scholarships under the program. Caitlin is planning to undertake an internship and mentorship in Singapore and says she was motivated by the “unbelievable opportunities and experiences it exposes you to”.
May will complete an internship at a community mental health organisation and mentorship within the Filipino music industry, as well as an internship in a youth and community mental health organisation in South Korea.
May says her personal experiences inspired her ambition of working with the community to foster resilience and emotional intelligence.
“My internship goal for the NCP program is to explore mental health in Asian communities through working in the music therapy sector,” May says.
“I also aim to reduce the prevalence of mental illness and stigma by promoting conversations about mental health.
“I am fortunate to be surrounded by passionate peers and organisations pioneering a movement in cultural mental health and music psychology, and I'm so excited to intern within these areas during my program overseas.”
Rabia Rasul, Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws student, is planning to undertake an internship at the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia and UN Office of Drugs and Crime, which she says she hopes will deepen her understanding of “the intersection between policy, law and culture”.
Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Commerce (Finance) student Gabriel Tambakis will complete a three-month internship in the legal team at the PGA Tour Asia headquarters in either Malaysia or Singapore. Gabriel says the scholarship combines his love for both sports and law to enable young people to follow their passions.
“Through this opportunity, I aim to utilise my interest in both fields to build resources that empower young athletes, paving the way for them to pursue their dreams in the world of professional sports,” says Gabriel.
“My ultimate goal is to use this opportunity to inspire young minds, redefine societal norms in the sporting world, and contribute to strengthening athletic partnerships between Australia and our Asian neighbours.”
Macquarie University Vice-Chancellor Professor S Bruce Dowton offered his congratulations to the scholars for their selection for this esteemed opportunity.
“Being selected for the New Colombo Plan Scholarship is a testament to these four students’ academic achievements, leadership qualities, and commitment to global engagement,” says Professor Dowton.
“I have every confidence that our students will make meaningful contributions and cross-cultural connections during their scholarships.”
