Macquarie University launches 10 new research centres to address global challenges

Macquarie University has launched 10 new or renewed research centres that build on existing and emerging strengths within and across disciplines and address some of the world’s most complex and pressing challenges.

The Macquarie University Research Centres will bring together leading researchers to focus on key issues within the University’s five research priorities: Healthy People, Resilient Societies, Prosperous Economies, Secure Planet and Innovative Technologies.

“These research centres will accelerate research and research training excellence at Macquarie. They will also create opportunities for researchers to coordinate, collaborate and reach consilience across the University and beyond, including with industry, government, community and other stakeholders” said Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Sakkie Pretorius.

“Each of these centres offers strength at scale, strong team leadership, competitive advantage, new external opportunities and the promise of emergence as their multidisciplinary teams collaborate on significant real-world problems.”

Macquarie University DataX Research Centre

Designing data innovations that drive new discoveries in science, health and society.

The DataX Research Centre is hosted across all four faculties. This Consilience Centre aims to harness the exponential growth in data volume, variety and velocity to transform data-driven discovery and solutions to complex problems.

Centre leaders: Professor Niloufer Selvadurai, Professor Hanlin Shang, Professor Paul Sowman, Professor Jian Yang.

Macquarie University Future Communications Research Centre

Advancing the frontiers of universal secure connectivity.

The Future Communications Research Centre is hosted by the Faculty of Science and Engineering. This Consilience Centre aims to develop a new generation of communications solutions that deliver connectivity with unprecedented speed, scalability, mobility, privacy, security and resilience.

Centre leaders: Professor Iain Collings, Professor Judith Dawes, Professor Dali Kaafar, Professor Annabelle McIver and Dr Hazer Inaltekin.

Macquarie University Lifespan Health and Wellbeing Research Centre

Advancing social, emotional and cognitive health and wellbeing for all.

The Lifespan Health and Wellbeing Research Centre is hosted by the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences. This Consilience Centre aims to develop evidence-based approaches to understanding and maximising psychological and social health and wellbeing from infancy to older adulthood.

Macquarie University Smart Green Cities Research Centre

Creating liveable smart green cities of the future.

The Smart Green Cities Research Centre is hosted by the Faculty of Science and Engineering. This Consilience Centre aims to create collaborative evidence-based solutions for liveable smart green cities of the future.

Centre leaders: Professor Michelle Leishman, Professor Michael Sheng, Professor Darren Bagnall, Professor Melanie Bishop, Associate Professor Peter Davies, Associate Professor Noushin Nasiri, Dr Rohan Best, Dr Sara Deilami, Professor Maria Kangas, Dr Caragh Threlfall and Professor Cathy Sherry.

Macquarie University Transforming Energy Markets Research Centre

Designing energy markets for a net zero carbon future.

The Transforming Energy Markets Research Centre is hosted by Macquarie Business School. This Consilience Centre aims to navigate technological, regulatory and financial challenges to facilitate the smooth transition of existing, emerging and new energy markets to a decarbonised future.

Centre leaders: Professor Stefan Trueck, Professor Tina Soliman Hunter, Professor Vito Mollica, Professor Vladimir Strezov, Professor Sean Foley, Associate Professor Yijiao Jiang and Dr Madeline Taylor.

Macquarie University Astrophysics and Space Technologies Research Centre

Exploring the Universe and the technologies that enable its discovery.

The Astrophysics and Space Technologies Research Centre is hosted by the Faculty of Science and Engineering. This Strength-at-Scale Centre aims to push the limits of astrophysics and space science through cutting-edge instrumentation development and complex data-intensive research capabilities.

The Ethics and Agency Research Centre is hosted by the Faculty of Arts. This Strength-at-Scale Centre aims to lead research in ethics, human agency and justice in the face of rapid social, technological, legal and environmental changes

Macquarie University Hearing Research Centre

Collaborating to innovate and transform hearing health for all.

The Hearing Research Centre is hosted by the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences. This Strength-at-Scale Centre aims to address major hearing health challenges and provide equitable and accessible hearing care pathways that support communication, wellbeing and social connectedness.

Macquarie University Motor Neuron Disease Research Centre

Striving to create a world free of Motor Neuron Disease.

The Motor Neuron Disease Research Centre is hosted by the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences. This Strength-at-Scale Centre aims to harness an integrated discovery and evidence-based clinical program to deliver advances in patient outcomes and improve the lives of MND patients and their families.

Macquarie University Performance and Expertise Research Centre

Realising human potential in a changing world.

The Performance and Expertise Research Centre is hosted by the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences. This Strength-at-Scale Centre aims to understand the complex nature of human performance and expertise, especially ways to assess, enhance and future-proof our potential in a changing world.
