A global leader in coastal wetland research, Professor Saintilan’s research has shifted the understanding of how these ecosystems respond to sea-level rise.
"I'm deeply honoured to receive this award," Professor Saintilan said. "Coastal wetlands are critical to how we respond to climate change, and I hope this recognition helps reinforce the importance of protecting and restoring these ecosystems, not just in Australia but worldwide.”

Professor Neil Saintilan is a world-leader in earth science.
Through his research into how coastal wetlands adapt to changing conditions, Professor Saintilan has contributed to major environmental reform, including providing his expertise to the $8 billion Murray–Darling Basin water reform to guide environmental water management.
Saintilan's research continues to influence both policy and public understanding of coastal ecosystems as the impacts of climate change accelerate.
The Mawson Medal recognises research in the Earth sciences and honours the contribution to science in Australia by Sir Douglas Mawson FAA FRS, geologist and Antarctic explorer.
