Psychology leads improved performance for Macquarie in the 2026 Times Higher Education Subject Rankings.

Macquarie University has again strengthened its global standing in the Times Higher Education (THE) 2026 Subject Rankings, with Psychology confirmed as a top 100 subject worldwide and multiple disciplines recording significant improvements.

The University also placed in the top 10 in Australia in eight disciplines: Psychology, Arts and Humanities, Business and Economics, Computer Science, Education, Medicine and Health, Physical Sciences, and Social Sciences.

Psychology rose to 89th globally, up from 96th last year, reinforcing Macquarie’s reputation for excellence in psychological science, research impact and education.

The result places Macquarie among the world’s leading universities in the discipline and highlights the University’s sustained investment in mental health, wellbeing and behavioural research.

Professor Maria Kangas, Head the School of Psychological Sciences, said the result reflects the calibre and dedication of staff and students across teaching, research and engagement.

“This is a wonderful recognition of the work our community is doing every day,” Professor Kangas said.

“Our researchers are tackling some of the most pressing challenges facing modern society, from mental health and resilience to human behaviour in complex environments. This ranking speaks to the strength of our evidence-based teaching, our world-class research outputs, and the tangible impact of our work.”

Macquarie University’s Psychology program is underpinned by strong industry and clinical partnerships, ensuring graduates are well prepared for diverse careers across health, research, policy and industry.

The strong Psychology result sits alongside improvements across a range of disciplines in the 2026 rankings. Arts and Humanities, Business and Economics, Clinical and Health disciplines, and Engineering all recorded upward movement, reflecting the University’s broad-based academic strength.

The Times Higher Education Subject Rankings assess universities across teaching, research environment, research quality, industry engagement and international outlook.
