Presented by Emerging Writers’ Festival in partnership with Macquarie UniversityThursday 21 March – Dixson Room, State Library of New South Wales

On Thursday 21 March the Emerging Writers’ Festival and Macquarie University will present Between the Covers. Now in its fourth year of partnership with Macquarie University, it is being held at the State Library of New South Wales for the first time.

The industry masterclass will cover the ins-and-outs of building a successful and sustainable career as a writer and editor. Industry experts, authors, publishers and editors will come together to share invaluable insights into the publishing industry. The afternoon panels cover getting started as an editor, how to succeed as a freelancer, and what publishers are looking for from new writers.

“At the core of EWF is a commitment to providing opportunities for emerging writers to connect and nurture their craft. We’re thrilled to return to Sydney, continuing our partnership with Macquarie University to draw together some of tomorrow’s most exciting emerging and established voices,” said Izzy Roberts-Orr, Artistic Director of the Emerging Writers’ Festival.

Roanna Gonsalves (author of The Permanent Resident and winner of the NSW Premier’s Literary Awards Multicultural Prize 2018) will give a keynote talk on the importance of literature to Australian culture. Other key speakers include Robert Watkins (Head of Literary & Head of Illustrated at Hachette Australia), Intan Paramaditha (author of Apple and Knife), Winnie Dunn (Manager and Editor at SWEATSHOP) and Hsu-Ming Teo (Associate Professor, Department of English, Macquarie University).

The panels are followed by an evening performance event, A Postmodern Utopia, featuring some of Sydney’s best emerging writers as they explore visions for a utopic future. (Performance-only tickets available.)

“Between the Covers is a unique opportunity for emerging writers and editors, including our creative writing students, to build the skills for a sustainable career in the literary industry. We’re also very excited to have the support of the State Library of New South Wales. Holding the event at the Library takes us to the home of Australian literature,” said Associate Professor Jane Messer, author and director of the creative writing program, Department of English, Macquarie University.
