The Faculty of Arts recently hosted LCNAU 2015 National Colloquium bringing together educators and researchers involved in languages and cultures at tertiary level in Australia.
The third biennial Languages and Cultures Network for Australian Universities Colloquium offered three days of workshops, papers and poster sessions to over 150 attendees under the theme of ‘Tertiary Language and Culture programs: Directions in Research, Teaching and Policy’.
The Colloquium covered a broad range of research and topics being faced by institutions today. The plenary talks were all well-received, and included themes of support for minority languages (Prof John Simons, Macquarie University), transforming university language learning in the 21st Century (Prof Anne Pauwels, University of London) and language learning beyond the classroom (Prof David Nunan, University of Hong Kong).
In addition to the programme of papers on the colloquium theme, the LCNAU Colloquium co-hosted the inaugural conferral of the Patji Dawes Award. As part of the conferral, well-known Australian author, Robert Dessaix also delivered a speech on the importance of teaching. Read full text online
“Macquarie University staff delivered 11 papers and organised five workshops for the colloquium on themes ranging from support for heritage languages to a platform for HDR students to discuss developing efficient tools for bridging the gap between teaching and research.”
“The Colloquium was a great success as it brought together national and international academics interested in languages and cultures, opening opportunities for cooperative research and teaching”, says Associate Professor Estela Valverde, Head of Department, Department of International Studies: Languages and Cultures.
Organised the by Department of International Studies: Languages and Cultures, the Colloquium also saw the launch of the University Languages Portal Australia (ULPA). Designed in partnership with Macquarie University, ANU and The University of Melbourne, ULPA aims to improve access to languages at tertiary level for all Australian students by offering the information in one online location and including both Indigenous Australian and global languages.
