At the Macquarie University 2014 Blues Awards ceremony on Thursday 6 November, 13 athletes were recognised for their outstanding achievements representing Macquarie University, their state or nation across the past year.
FOX Sport rugby commentator Sean Maloney was the Master of Ceremony and the Macquarie University Chancellor, the honourable Michael Egan was in attendance.
Four athletes were awarded the highly prestigious Full Blue Award and six received a Half Blue Award. Five athletes and one sport administrator received recognition with other major awards, including the Female/Male Sport Athlete of the Year and the Chancellor’s Award.
The Full Blues winners were; Tim Binns (Dragon Boat Racing), Alison Borrows (Canoe Slalom), John Georgas (Karate) and Lucy Glanville (Biathlon and Cross Country Skiing).
The Half Blues winners were; Sarah Beale (Equestrian), Samuel Burston (Cycling), Kelly McGuinness (Karate), Todd Stephenson (Ice Hockey), Liam Kelly (Surf Lifesaving) and Cameron Todd (Inline Skating and Ice Hockey).
Lucy Glanville received the first award of the night for Female Sport Athlete of the Year. Lucy is a member of the Australian Biathlon, Australian Junior Cross Country and Australian National Cross Country Squads and is currently ranked number one in the sport of Biathlon in Australia. Following a successful year in 2013 was selected in the 2014 Australian team at the Sochi Winter Olympic Games. Securing her place in sporting history as only the third female Australian to compete at the Olympics since Nagano 1998.
Dylan Shiel was the recipient of the Male Sport Athlete of the Year for his role as a key member of the Greater Western Sydney Giants midfield, playing 21 games and averaging just under 20 possessions a contest. Dylan’s season was capped off by a 9th place in the Sheedy Medal GWS Best and Fairest and winning the GWS Goal of the Year, continuing his progress towards becoming one of the AFL’s elite on-ballers.
The prestigious 2014 Macquarie University Chancellor’s Award was presented to Jason King who was also nominated for the 2014 Male Sport Athlete of the Year. The Chancellor’s Award is the highest individual sporting award; it recognises a student for an outstanding contribution and/or performance whilst a student at Macquarie University.
A former co-captain of the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles, New South Wales Blues and NSW City Origin representative and Dally M Capital of the year in 2012 Jason is now a household name. In 2014, after 14seasons and 239 first grade appearances for the Manly Sea Eagles, Jason announced his retirement from Rugby League at the end of the 2014 season.
Despite his playing commitments, Jason has always shown a willingness to contribute and support Macquarie University as a guest speaker, Master of Ceremony and mentor to first year sport scholars making him a very worthy recipient of the prestigious Chancellors Award.
The John Lincoln Services Award, which recognises long term volunteer service to a Sport Club, Sport Program or Unisport event, was presented to Paul Clift for his active involvement in the Macquarie University Cricket Club Committee for the past 13 seasons, taking on various roles throughout this time.
Most notably, Paul held the position of Secretary of the Cricket Club for five seasons and President of the Club from 2008 to 2013 while filling a wide variety of other roles for the Club including SCA delegate and University Liaison Officer.
The Ted O’Keeffe Scholarship was presented to Tim Binns. Since 2005 Tim has competed for the Open Age NSW State team. In 2012 and 2014 he secured his spot as one of the top ranked members of the Open Age Australian Dragon Boat team.
As well as his sporting commitments, Tim is completing a Bachelor of Science majoring in Statistics, with an impressive GPA of 3.9. Tim has also made a significant contribution to the University through his work alongside Macquarie University Sport staff in the development of a Dragon Boating program.
Andrew Clark was the recipient of the Leigh Barnier ‘Spirit of the Games’ Award. The Leigh Barnier ‘Spirit of the Games’ Award recognises the passion for and contribution to Macquarie University by former Sport Scholar, Leigh Barnier who was tragically killed in a skiing accident in 2008. The award from presented by Leigh’s friends and fellow Alumni Blues Recipients, Grant Brits and Alex Coombes, alongside Leigh’s parents Frank and Debbie Barnier
The recipient of the award, Andrew Clark is a 5th year student completing a Bachelor of Arts with a Bachelor of Laws and competes as an elite athlete in the sport of Mountain Biking.Since joining the Sport Scholarship program in 2011, Andrew has become an exceptional ambassador for sport, health promotion, student engagement and leadership programs at Macquarie University representing Macquarie University at Australian University Games events, sharing his experiences as an elite student athlete and recruiting his fellow students to get involved in Sport at Macquarie.
“The event was extremely successful. Thirteen of our exceptionally talented and bright Macquarie University students received well deserved recognition for their achievements in both the sporting and academic arena throughout the night” said Cindy Hoad, General Manager Sport and Recreation, "We also welcomed back 24 of our Alumni Blues recipients from 2000-2009 to receive their Blues Blazer. It was also an opportunity for them to reminisce with old friends, see how far Macquarie University has come in our Jubilee year and hear about the exceptional achievements of, and make connections with our current student cohort."
