Sumiya Sultan, who graduated from Macquarie University last semester after pursuing a Bachelor of Engineering with Honours in Electronics, has been awarded the 2016 NSW International Student of the Year Award in Higher Education.

The award, organised by StudyNSW within the NSW Department of Premier and Cabinet, recognises outstanding contributions made by international students to communities in NSW, with the winners announced at the Sydney Opera House last night.

Sumiya has been recognised not just for her academic achievements, but importantly for the contribution she continues to make which not only helps others, but adds value to the community.

Sumiya has been the driving force behind the establishment of the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) initiative on campus at Macquarie University which aims to motivate women by providing them with a sense of ownership and importance.

“In my first class there was only six or seven women and I knew this had to change so I established the women and science engineering group at Macquarie University,” said Sumiya.

“After moving to NSW, I have become more grounded in what I believe and I want to work towards empowering women to go up there and give it all they’ve got.”

Sumiya’s success is an example of extraordinary work which helps make the community at Macquarie University better for all those who live and study in it.

“Within a few months, the group grew to 82 members,” said Sumiya. “Now, the success of our group has allowed us to access external funding sources that would otherwise not be available, and I lead a team of eight executive members.”

Macquarie University’s Manager, Career and Employment Julie Doherty who nominated Sumiya for the award said she "really stood out as an exceptional student, not only because of her academic achievements, but that she was ready to adapt and influence, and make a difference.”

Congratulations to Sumiya for her contributions in leading female international students on campus!
