The 2015 National Archaeology Student (NAS) Conference ran from Friday 14 – Sunday 16 August, co-hosted by Macquarie University and the University of Sydney. The event was widely recognised for being one of the most successful NAS conferences.
Macquarie University hosted the pre-conference workshops on Friday 14 August which included student presentations by Samantha Jones, Rodney Cross and Aaron de Souza about their archaeological fieldwork and networking experience in Italy and Egypt.
Macquarie PhD candidate Mary Hartley taught the basics and importance of technical archaeological fieldwork illustration; while Dr Adela Sobotkova, Dr Brian Ballsun-Stanton and Professor Shawn Ross demonstrated a practical demo of their FAIMS (Federated Archaeological Information Management System) mobile app, which allows offline digital recording in the field.
The students enjoyed a Q&A featuring Professor Amanda Esterhuysen, Dr Aedeen Cremin and Professor Kenneth Sheedy before attending the keynote presentation by Dr Aedeen Cremin (University of Canberra) at Macquarie's Museum of Ancient Cultures in the evening.
Conference proceedings continued at the University of Sydney on the Saturday and Sunday with over 100 attendees observing over 30 presentations and posters from archaeology students nationwide.
International keynote speaker, Professor Amanda Esterhuysen, gave a stirring presentation about her experience in dealing with political issues involved with educating and preserving South Africa's cultural heritage, encouraging students to consider the many issues that may impact their study and careers in the field of archaeology.
Presentations by Macquarie students included Georgia Burnett, Brenan Dew, Coral Hardwick and Eli Genetzakis, Charles Barnett and Olivier Rochecouste; who received an honourable mention for his paper, 'Marx, Childe and the Predynastic Elite Revolution' in the overall 'Bruce G. Trigger award for archaeological thought' category.
The conference organising committee would like to thank Macquarie University as a major supporter of the conference, in particular the Faculty of Arts, Department of Ancient History, Museum of Ancient Cultures, Macquarie University Art Gallery, Staff Caf̬, Macquarie Ancient History Association and Museum Appreciation Society student groups.
