The Centre for Financial Risk at Macquarie University will hold its third annual Risk Day Conference on 22 March, examining stability within global financial markets – a topic that has never been more important.

Sponsored by the Centre for International Finance and Regulation, the key focus of the event will not only be on financial stability, but the wider implications of risk, including credit risk management, sovereign and systemic risk, and risk in the insurance industry. It will also consider regulatory implications.

Key speaker and leading risk expert, Dr Edward I. Altman, Professor of Finance at the Stern School of Business, New York University, will present on ‘Assessing Sovereign Debt Default Risk: A Novel Bottom-Up Approach’. His presentation will examine whether some governments may still encounter difficulties making their debt payments. This is the most crucial factor for determining the ongoing stability of global financial markets.

His research, which approaches this important issue from a fresh perspective, will be of interest to lenders, borrowers, regulators, financial risk managers and government bodies interested in the underlying issues such as the GFC and government debt.

Dr Altman has an international reputation as an expert on corporate bankruptcy, high yield bonds, distressed debt and credit risk analysis. Before his present position, Dr Altman chaired the Stern School's MBA Program for 12 years.

Professor Stefan Trueck, Director of the Centre for Financial Risk, Faculty of Business and Economics, Macquarie University said, “This event provides a platform for communication between academic researchers, financial risk managers, regulators, insurance professionals, actuaries and market practitioners.”

“We have some excellent speakers coming together to share their ideas, experiences and insights in financial risk management,” said Professor Trueck.

The aim of the Financial Risk Day event is to exchange new ideas and the most recent research on analysing and managing the many strands of financial risk.

Other key speakers include:

  • Charles Littrell – APRA

  • Professor Mardi Dungey – UTAS

  • Dr Tony Coleman – LonerganEdwards & Associates

  • Dr Harold Scheule – UTS

  • Mike Ritchie - KPMG
