This year marks the 30th anniversary of the much loved Back to the Future Part II movie where the famous DeLorean time machine headed to October 21, 2015. The movie introduced audiences through the main character Marty, to a futuristic world filled with flying cars, hoverboards and automatic lacing sneakers and more.

Inspired by the DeLorean time machine in the movie, Master of Future Journalism students Laura Corrigan, Laura House, Laura Bennett and Claudia Ferris applied the concept to a project they were given as part of the MECO802 Futures Lab unit, to develop an editorial product for an industry partner. Named 88 Seconds in the DeLorean, the project team conducted a multi-platform journalism experiment for their industry partner, the university-run community radio 2SER FM located on campus. The students were mentored by former ABC news presenter Richard Morecroft and Melanie Withnall, Managing Director of 2SER.

“This class project focused on reporting about the future and included short videos made in our own Futures Lab Studio, articles on Storify, live social media aggregation via Twitter and Facebook, and audio interviews on Soundcloud. The students also experimented with the messaging app Slack for their internal communications,” explains Senior Lecturer in Journalism and Media, Dr Margie Borschke.

“The concept, production and distribution were led entirely by the students. They were given complete editorial control over their work, their processes and their interactions with each other and 2SER. They pitched the concept to 2SER based on their research into new modes of journalism practice and their experience with Design Thinking, a user-centred approach to development that advocates rapid prototyping."

The students’ work has been recognised beyond the University and was nominated for a Community Broadcasting Association of Australia Award in the Excellence in Digital Media category. This nomination resulted in them being one of five finalists in the category which is an excellent achievement.

Congratulations to our Master of Future Journalism students. We are very proud of this recognition of their work.

The students’ collection of multimedia investigations into what the future will hold can be viewed on the 2SER website.
