Macquarie University continues to climb the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings, jumping 15 places this year to secure 24th position globally.

The University also ranked sixth in Australia, an improvement of three places.

Released today, THE Impact Rankings assess the performance of universities against the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Vice-Chancellor Professor S Bruce Dowton says the University’s improved global ranking is indicative of its unrelenting sustainability efforts.

“Macquarie University has been working hard over many years in future-focused research and education to have an impact on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, as well as improving the sustainability of our organisation,” he says.

“Our sustainability goals are ambitious, and they must be if we are to make meaningful progress on these complex challenges.

“These rankings are an independent measure of our progress and I wish to congratulate all members of our University community for their contribution to this achievement, and to the broader goal of creating a better future for all.”

Now in its sixth year, the Impact Rankings mark the first global attempt to measure university progress specifically around the SDGs. The rankings methodology is based on universities’ teaching, research, outreach and stewardship.

For its overall score of 94.2, Macquarie University ranked sixth in the world for SDG6, Clean Water and Sanitation, 12th for SDG14, Life Below Water, and 25th for SDG17, Partnership for the Goals, which refers to the forging of strong international partnerships that support sustainable development across various sectors.

It also landed in the global top 50 in SDG15, Life on Land (27th), SDG8, Decent Work and Economic Growth (39th), and SDG13, Climate Action (44th).
