One of the nation’s most respected businesswomen, Ann Sherry AO was today awarded a Doctor of Letters honoris causa at Macquarie University.
Described in her citation as - “someone who is committed to making a difference to the lives of people in general and women in particular,” Ann Sherry was honoured for the significant contribution she has made throughout her career, both in the public service and in the corporate world.
Currently CEO of Carnival Australia, the largest cruise ship operator in Australasia and a division of Carnival Corporation, under Sherry’s leadership the industry has seen significant growth in recent years.
Prior to taking up her current role, Ann was with Westpac for 12 years and was Chief Executive Officer, Westpac New Zealand, the CEO of the Bank of Melbourne and Group Executive, People & Performance. In this role she was a driver of cultural change; community engagement and customer focus in commercial and retail banking.
In addition to her executive role, Ann holds a number of non-executive roles including ING Direct (Australia), Director of Jawun - Indigenous Corporate Partnerships, Australian Indigenous Education Foundation (AIEF). She is Deputy Chair of the Tourism & Transport Forum. She recently became the first woman to be appointed to the Board of Australian Rugby Union.
Over the years Sherry has also been credited as a strong advocate supporting social justice, equity and diversity. Driven by the values of inclusion, excellence and making a difference she has made significant contributions to capacity building of indigenous communities and individuals in Australia and the South Pacific.
