Macquarie University Surf Lifesaving Sport Scholar, Liam Kelly, recently made waves at the Rescue 2014 Lifesaving World Championships in Montpellier, France last month.
Competing as part of the German team, Liam placed 9th in the Board Rescue event, 10th in the Ironman, and 12th in the Surf Ski Race. His efforts contributed to the country being placed 4th overall in the Championships.
Selected for the German team in mid-2014, it was the first time that the surf lifesaver has competed at this particular competition.
“It was a very eye-opening experience to be able to see how many different countries actually compete in lifesaving competitions,” says Kelly.
“There were over 40 countries [competing]. It was very exciting to be a part of such a professional environment. Everyone in the team got along and we had a lot of fun along the way.
“Personally, I wanted to make all the finals in my events and to be the highest placed European competitor in each event.”
After a much-earned break, the Sport Scholar will continue to represent his local Manly club at competitions while training for the upcoming NSW and Australian state titles in March and April 2015.
Liam is studying a Masters of Chiropractic and is in his fourth year at Macquarie University.
