In a first-of-its-kind event, the Macquarie University museums and collections are coming together in a joint venture to create the Light Paper Festival: an interactive showcase of the art, history, science and environmental research that goes into a humble sheet of paper.

The festival will include an array of activities and exhibitions for those on campus and the wider community, with the aim of displaying a variety of paper-related skills, art, and expertise that the University museums and collections have to offer.

“The Light Paper Festival will allow Macquarie University curators and experts alike to show off their beautiful collections of art, historical artefacts, and research on paper-related aspects in a unique and interactive exhibition that spans many a field,” said Rhonda Davis, senior curator at the University Art Gallery.

“It will demonstrate just how profound and captivating the knowledge kept in our campus museums and collections can be,” she added.

Some of the events and exhibitions at the festival include handmade paper and outdoor vista sketching workshops, an origami class, a display of engraved prints dating from the 15th through to the 20th century, a presentation on how paper production impacts the environment, and a fundraising book drive to boot.

“One particularly unique exhibition will display a selection of field notes rarely seen on public display by both emerging and leading academics from Macquarie University, which offers visitors a extraordinary insight into how our own researchers scribe their discoveries,” said Rhonda.

The festival will run all day on Friday 30th October 2015, with individual event times and costs included in the event program. There will also be a festival launch on the day starting at 10 am at the University Art Gallery.
