A number of well-known Macquarie University figures are among those celebrated today in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.
Australian Governor General Sir Peter Cosgrove expressed his admiration for the achievements of all recipients.
“You now join the company of men and women whose actions have enriched our community and whose values we hold dear - compassion, dedication, generosity, tolerance, energetic ambition," he said.
Professor Jim Piper, who retired as Deputy-Vice-Chancellor (Research) of Macquarie University last year became a member (AM) in the general division “for significant service to tertiary education, particularly through research in applied laser physics”.
Vice-Chancellor S Bruce Dowton paid tribute to Professor Piper’s contribution.
“Without any doubt, Professor Piper is one of Macquarie University’s and Australia’s most distinguished researchers and academic leaders,” he said. “Professor Piper has recently retired from Macquarie University after a lifetime of service in many domains within the university, his discipline of Physics and throughout Australian science.”
Other Macquarie recipients of Queen’s Birthday Honours include:

- Vice-President Health and Medical Development at Macquarie, Professor Michael Morgan AO (Officer in the General Division) “for distinguished service to medicine as a neurovascular surgeon, researcher and educator, as an international leader and mentor, and to professional organisations”.
- Macquarie University Council member, and Macquarie alumni, Chum Darvall AM, “for significant service to the finance and banking sector, and through contributions to not-for-profit organisations and the performing arts”.
- Former PVC Academic and Founder of Warawara, Emeritus Professor Alan Lindsay AM, “for significant service to higher education, to academic and business development, and to international education”.
