In Macquarie’s first year in the over 50 years category of the UK’s Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, the University has placed in the 301-350 band out of 800 institutions worldwide.

The THE rankings are generated from five Pillars, each of which represents a key area of higher education excellence: teaching, research, citations, industry income, and international outlook. Macquarie was able to improve upon its scores in teaching, research, citations, and industry outlook this year compared to 2014.

Macquarie performed particularly well in the International outlook Pillar, where it ranked in the first decile. This Pillar takes into account the University’s appeal for international students and staff, as well as the University’s proportion of international collaboration in research – each indicators of the University’s success on the world stage.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Corporate Engagement and Advancement), Professor David Wilkinson, said that as Macquarie has moved into the larger, heavyweight age category, it was pleasing to see that Macquarie’s Pillar scores had improved in four of the five categories.

“Although international ranking systems are better viewed as indicators rather than endpoints of university performance, we are glad to see that our first 50 years have positioned us in good stead to continue rising through the ranks in terms of reputation and performance.”

Prior to the University’s 50th Jubilee in 2014, Macquarie University had consistently ranked in the Top 100 Universities Under 50 worldwide.

Phil Baty, editor of the THE Rankings said: “The Times Higher Education World University Rankings, now in their 12th year, apply rigorous standards, using tough global benchmarks across all of a global research university’s key missions – teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. The results are trusted by students and their families, academics, university leaders and governments.

“For Macquarie University to make 301-350 in the world is an outstanding achievement to be celebrated.”
