The annual awards, announced by the Governor-General, Her Excellency the Honourable Ms Sam Mostyn AC, recognise Australian individuals and their achievements across diverse fields locally, nationally and internationally.
Vice-Chancellor Professor S Bruce Dowton congratulated the University’s recipients: “Each year the Australia Day Honours list shines a light on the incredible contributions of those who work tirelessly to make our country a better place.
“On behalf of the Macquarie University community, I extend a warm congratulations to all our honourees for both their commitment and this special accolade.”
Among the University’s honourees, Industry Professor Philip Chung from the Macquarie Law School received a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for significant service to the law, particularly his contribution to public access to legal information, and to tertiary education.
Alumnus and longstanding member of the University’s Centre for Environmental Law Advisory Board, The Honourable Justice Brian John Preston SC received an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for distinguished service to the judiciary and the law, to legal academia, and to environmental and natural resources governance and education.
Emeritus Professor Gillian Triggs, who holds an Honorary Doctor of Laws from Macquarie University, was recognised with a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) for eminent service to humanitarian and human rights law, to international relations, to social justice advocacy, and to tertiary legal education and research.
For her service to the Indigenous community of New South Wales, including through Macquarie University’s Australian Research Institute for Environment and Sustainability, Edna Watson received a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM).
Dr Graeme Gwilliam, a former Visiting Fellow with the School of Engineering, was bestowed an OAM for service to engineering, and to the community, while the late Professor Daryll Hull, former Co-director of the Centre for Workforce Futures and esteemed student mentor in the Macquarie Business School, received an AM for significant service to the transport industry, and to tertiary education.
Stuart Clark, who holds an Honorary Doctorate at Macquarie University and is an alumnus of first class of the Macquarie Law School, was awarded the Australian Fire Service Medal (AFSM) for distinguished service.
Macquarie University also congratulates members of its alumni community who were honoured:
- Mr Adam Johnston - Awarded the Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for significant service to community health, to the law, and to people living with a disability.
- Mrs Donna Ross (Ross-Sherba) - Awarded the Public Service Medal (PSM) for outstanding public service to public administration in the Australian Taxation Office and the wider Australian public sector in particular during the COVID-19 pandemic.
- The late Professor Lyndall Ryan - Posthumously awarded the Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for distinguished service to tertiary education, particularly Indigenous history and colonial settlement through research and publications.
- Mr Geoffrey Sharrock - Awarded the Member of the Order of Australia for significant service to the mining industry and to the community.
- Commodore Richard Caton, PSM RAN - Awarded the Member of the Order of Australia (AM) Military Division for exceptional service in senior defence management and international relationship roles.
- Mr John Mason - Awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for service to the community of Millthorpe.
- Detective Sergent Ellen Quinn - Awarded an Australian Police Medal (APM) for distinguished service as a member of the NSW Police Force
- Mr Robert Conroy - Awarded an Australian Fire Service Medal (AFSM) for distinguished service as a member of the NSW Rural Fire Service.
- Mr Bernard Carlon- Awarded a Public Service Medal (PSM) for outstanding public service to NSW in the area of road safety and sustainability.
- Mr Peter Gainsford - Awarded a Public Service Medal (PSM) for outstanding public service to local government in Sydney’s Inner West.
- Mr David Stuart-Watt - Awarded the Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for significant service to the civil infrastructure and transport industry.
