Macquarie University’s April 2015 graduation series commences on Tuesday 7 April, with more than 15000 guests expected to attend ceremonies taking place on campus to celebrate and acknowledge the achievements of more than 3900 graduates attending to receive their awards.

During this special time for graduates and their families, the University will award more than 5300 degrees, diplomas and certificates. Of the degrees conferred, 122 will go to Doctoral (e.g. PhD) candidates.

A further 93 exceptional students will receive a Vice-Chancellor’s Commendation for meritorious work. To achieve this award, students must have maintained a Distinction or High Distinction result for each and every unit of study undertaken in their degree program, or in the case of research students, have submitted theses for examination of an exceptionally high standard.

Following a successful pilot in 2014, all ceremonies will also be live streamed via YouTube, facilitating the welcome inclusion of family, friends and supporters who are unable to attend the event on site, but would like to support their loved one.

Two honorary doctorates will also be awarded during the Wednesday 8 April ceremonies, to candidates representing significant leadership in environmental law, and property development:

April 8, 2:30pm ceremony: Mr John Whitehouse Doctor of Laws (honoris causa); recognising him as one of Australia's leading environment and planning lawyers acting in relation to major development, mining and environmental issues. Mr Whitehouse has been a Visiting Fellow in the Graduate School of Environment at Macquarie University since 1997, and has lectured in the course GSE 801 Environmental Law and Policy since 1995. He is a solicitor in a private practice in Sydney.

April 8, 6:00pm ceremony: Mr Colin Lam Doctor of Business (honoris causa); recognising his achievements in property development with emphasis on sustainability and environmental protection. Mr Lam is a Fellow of the Hong Kong Institute of Directors and he now sits on the board of five listed companies in Hong Kong, two of which are Hang Seng Index constituents. The flagship company, Henderson Land Development Co. Ltd., of which he has been a Vice Chairman since 1993, is one of the largest developers in Hong Kong, and has diversified investments in property, utility, hotel, department store, mortgage finance, construction and transportation.

Honorary degrees are awarded in recognition of exceptional achievement or contribution in relation to a particular field or discipline, and/or to the University and society. Honorary awards are identified by the inclusion of ‘Hon’ in the post-nominals. The recipients of honorary awards represent a balanced group that demonstrates the breadth of the University’s areas of interest and expertise.
