Congratulations to the Macquarie Law School's mooting team on their semi-final success at the Australian National rounds of the 2015 Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition.
The Macquarie Law School team of five - Michal Solecki, Jack Oakley, Eliza Fitzgerald, Sam Voller, and Sasha Steinhoff - worked tirelessly over a period of months, preparing oral and written submissions addressing legal issues concerning public international law matters. The team knocked out Australian National University, University of Melbourne, Monash University and University of Adelaide, and progressed to the semi-finals.
Jessup is the largest mooting competition in the world, attracting participants from almost 700 law schools in more than 90 countries. The Jessup moot involves arguing a hypothetical case on issues of international law as if before the International Court of Justice. The competition is regarded worldwide as the most prestigious mooting competition for law students.
"It's been a great experience for the team and a great learning experience as well. They have done Macquarie proud," said Dr Margaret Kelly, Senior Lecturer in the Macquarie Law School and faculty advisor to the team.
In addition to reaching the semi-finals, the team also placed second in the Respondent Memorial category, while students Solecki and Voller were recognised as best oralists.
"This achievement was the culmination of months of extremely challenging work by the team. It was exciting to see the effort we all put in rewarded," said Solecki.
"We were lucky to have the support of Macquarie alumni, Macquarie staff and other professionals who gave up their time to judge practice moots and provide invaluable feedback."
The Faculty of Arts congratulates the Macquarie Law School Jessup team on this great achievement.
