The Chairman of the Australian Stock Exchange, Rick Holliday-Smith BA(Hons) FAICD, was awarded an honorary doctorate on 23 September as part of the University’s spring graduation series, which commenced last week.
The honorary doctorate recognises Holliday-Smith’s distinguished career in the banking and financial services industry, which has spanned nearly 40 years. He has held positions in Australia, Europe and the United States at the highest levels of management and, in addition to his role at the ASX, he is currently the Chairman of Cochlear Limited and a director of Servcorp Limited. He holds a Bachelor of Arts with Honours from Macquarie University and is a Chartered Accountant and Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
Honorary degrees are awarded in recognition of exceptional achievement or contribution in relation to a particular field or discipline, and/or to the University and society. The recipients of honorary awards represent a balanced group that demonstrates the breadth of the University’s areas of interest and expertise.
“It is a great privilege to be able to present an honorary degree to Mr Holliday-Smith, a long-standing alumnus and great friend of Macquarie University. With his bachelor’s degree in Arts, his outstanding career in finance and business, and his chairmanship of Cochlear Ltd, Mr Holliday-Smith’s experience is relevant across a wide range of the University’s activites. I am honoured to recognise him with this award,” says Vice-Chancellor Professor S Bruce Dowton.
As part of the graduation series this month, nearly 3200 graduates will receive their degrees, diplomas and certificates from Macquarie University. Of the degrees conferred, 167 will go to Doctoral candidates and 46 will go to the first Doctor of Physiotherapy graduates at Macquarie University. A further 41 exceptional students will receive a Vice-Chancellor’s Commendation for meritorious work.
