Vice-Chancellor’s Awards for Learning and Teaching announced

Macquarie University celebrates and rewards excellence, and as part of Learning and Teaching Week, the Vice-Chancellor’s Awards for learning and teaching provide an important way of acknowledging the contributions made by university staff, whether academic, technical or professional – to the student learning experience.

In 2013 a wide spread of staff have been recognised right across the University, its disciplines and organisational units:

The Vice Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence:

  • Associate Professor Greg Downey – Department of Anthropology

  • Dr Debbie Haski-Leventhal (Early Career) – Macquarie Graduate School of Management

  • Ms Carolyn Kennett – Numeracy Centre and the Department of Mathematics

  • Mr Nicholas McGuigan – Department of Accounting and Corporate Governance


The Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Higher Degree Research Supervision:

  • Professor Richie Howitt – Department of Environment and Geography


The Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Programs that Enhance Learning:

  • Monitoring and Supporting Accounting students “At Risk”. Dr Rahat Munir.

  • The new Foundations of Law Program: promoting inclusion, improving retention and achieving learning outcomes. Mr George Tomossy, Dr Carlos Bernal-Pulido, Ms Zara Bending and Ms Catherine Greentree.

  • ResearchEd: Promoting Pre-service Teachers’ Engagement in Educational Research. Dr Penny Van Bergen and Dr Rod Lane.


The Vice-Chancellor’s Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning:

  • Associate Professor Kelsie Dadd, for leading learning and teaching in Science and instilling confidence in staff to undertake their own research and legitimising education research in Science.

  • Dr John De Nobile, for using a range of strategies to establish student-centred and positive classroom climates, with a focus on quality and engaging learning experiences.

  • Dr Diane Hughes, for an outstanding contribution to facilitating student engagement and learning through the design of contemporary and innovative music curricula

  • Dr Jane Messer, for support of student engagement with graduate capabilities, through the design of an innovative curriculum, and resources that promote student motivation, resourcefulness and creativity.


These winners were celebrated at the annual Learning and Teaching Awards Dinner, held in Learning and Teaching Week.  They will be formally recognised with their awards at an appropriate graduation ceremony for their discipline, in front of their peers and graduating students.
